Facebook Shops can help businesses tide through Covid-19

Facebook CEO and Founder Mark Zuckerberg just announced the launch of a new platform, Facebook Shops on 19th May 2020. This allows small businesses to easily set up a shop on Facebook to sell items directly via the app.

In a Facebook post, Mark Zuckerberg says “I think this particularly important right now because so many small businesses are moving online to deal with the economic fallout from Covid-19. As people are being told to stay home, physical storefronts are having a hard time staying open and millions of people are losing their jobs.”

As Facebook Shops loads directly on the app, unlike traditional browser-based eCommerce, we can expect faster loading and a smoother experience.

An exciting feature of Facebook Shops would be that it leverages on AI and augmented reality technology to create better shopping experiences.

For example, customers browsing sunglasses, lipstick or makeup can preview them via augmented reality before making a purchase. A game-changer in the eCommerce industry.

Facebook automatically identifies and tags products in feeds so that people can click-through to make a purchase easily when customers find something that they like.

Facebook Shops will appear on the following platforms:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram

More platforms will be added including:

  • Messenger
  • Whatsapp

The new platform allows for integration with third-party eCommerce providers including:

  • Shopify
  • WooCommerce
  • BigCommerce
  • Channel Advisor
  • CedCommerce
  • Cafe 24
  • Tienda Nube
  • Feedonomics

This allows businesses using these platforms to integrate directly with Facebook Shops.

Facebook Shops will certainly improve the reach of eCommerce businesses and help many small business owners with the economic slowdown caused by Covid-19.

For people who want to generate a side income, selling items online is much easier as they do not need to build their own eCommerce website.

Note: These updates are being rolled out in gradual stages.
